Top Reasons To See Dear Evan Hansen

Its been a couple of weeks since I sat down and wrote a blog post, sadly I’ve just not felt up to writing. To bring me out of the slump I’m I thought I would write about why I love Dear Evan Hansen so much.

Dear Evan Hansen is a musical that I heard about a couple of years ago now. I instantly loved the songs and now that I’ve seen the show both on Broadway and the West End I’m more obsessed than ever. I have so many reasons why I love the show but here is some of my top reasons!

Songs

My number one reason to see Dear Evan Hansen has to be the songs. I wouldn’t be sat here today telling everyone why I think you should see the show if it wasn’t for the songs as they’re what got me truly hooked to the show. I actually heard Waving Through A Window and instantly loved it so then started to look at what show it came from and the rest is history. It’s one of the few cast recordings where you get a tiny idea of how emotional the show is and the lyrics are so relatable at times. Every single song is fantastic and I can guarantee that you’ll only enjoy it more once you’ve seen the show. I have listened to this cast recording probably more than any other album I own so I really recommend you listen more and its only proved how much I listen to it when Ben Platt was my artist of the decade on Spotify. Plus the cast recording is the original Broadway cast which includes now well known names such as Ben Platt, Will Roland and Laura Dreyfuss.

Relatability

I’ve said this time and time again but I relate so much with Evan and that is entirely why the show is so good. I think everyone watching will be able to draw parallels from characters to their own lives. You have a single parent mum working hard to do what she can to ensure her son has the best life she can give, a family suffering a loss of a loved one, a sister struggling to get to terms with the death of her brother, the dynamics of how a school reacts to the events of a suicide, a kid who so badly wants to fit in but every time he tries he worries about getting hurt…the list is endless. I’m sure every single person watch the show can relate to so many moments and that attachment is exactly what helps to make this show so good.

Important Messages

The show features so many important moments. For one, the show touches upon mental health in such a normal, believable way and I believe that it’s so important to have such a popular show that highlights these issues. Then you have moments such as You Will Be Found which reminds you that no matter what you’re not alone and Disappear which shows how no one should be forgotten no matter how insignificant you may feel you are.

Of course you have the popular quote, ‘Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be a good day and here’s why…’ I say that quote in my day to day life more often than I should admit, to the extent that people around me now start the day with that quote without even realising they’re actually quoting a musical. It’s crazy how one line in a show can really hit home to you and personally the last monologue with this in it is the final heartbreak moment in the show but it’s so wonderful.

Social Media

Social media is something that I’m sure most of us couldn’t imagine life without nowadays. Dear Evan Hansen is one of the few musicals that taps so heavily into social media. It launches a whole campaign on the internet / social media and you seen see the horrible side of it when the Murphy family are hit with the backlash from the Connor Project being online. So many of us use social media but Dear Evan Hansen portrays the positive and negative aspects of it so wonderfully. I feel that I don’t post horrible things aimed personally at people online but since seeing the show it’s certainly made me think about what I do share and post online.

I think with everything going on in the world today it’s fantastic that a show does feature something as relevant as social media and focusses on the negative aspects as well as the positives.

Sam Tutty

My final reason only sadly relates to the UK’s London production of Dear Evan Hansen and that is Sam Tutty who currently plays Evan. I’m embarrassed to admit that I judged him instantly when the cast list was announced as I felt he looked far too cool to play Evan, but boy I have never been happier to have been proven wrong. Sam Tutty was truly born to play the role of Evan Hansen and his performance absolutely emotionally destroyed me in the best possible way imaginable. Tears were uncontrollable pouring down my face at multiple points during the show due to the incredible acting from Sam Tutty. His acting skills are second to none and if you’re half familiar with the show already, be prepared for his Words Fail! I may be bias as I adore this show but personally I think his performance as Evan is the best thing you can see on the West End at the moment and if you’re in the area do try to get a ticket to catch him in Dear Evan Hansen. Obviously no matter who you see perform as Evan the show is incredible but personally Sam Tutty is my favourite that I’ve seen in the role.

Have you ever seen the show? If so I’d love to know if you liked it or didn’t and why!

His Royal Highness – R.S. Grey

Whitney has been in love with Derek Knightley since the day she was paired up with him in a mentor program. He leaves unexpectedly to go and run the London theme park leaving Whitney without a mentor and wondering what she did wrong. Since then she has spent the 8 years since he left wishing she could forget his existence. 8 years later Derek is back and the feelings Whitney felt for him come rushing back like a tsunami. 8 years ago Whitney would’ve had hearts in her eyes at even the slightest of advancement from Derek, now she’s built up her walls and wants to avoid him at all costs. Derek is confident and has decided that he wants Whitney in his life, and as the sole heir to the Knightley Kingdom he is more than used to getting what he wants.

I’ve read so many novels by R.S. Grey now and I know every time I pick one up that I’m going to love it. His Royal Highness is one of my favourite R.S. Grey novels. The whole story evolves around a Disneyland style park. I love Disneyland so a novel set in a theme park that revolves around a character who dresses up as the parks meetable Princess, where staff go through underground tunnels to avoid being seen by the public and even the owner of the park leaves in the castle itself…or so the rumour has it, was always going to be something I enjoyed. If you’ve ever loved going to Disney and wanted to read a romance novel that is set in a theme park like Disney then this is absolutely the book for you.

I had mixed opinions on Whitney. On the one hand I can completely see why she held a grudge against Derek for so long. He disappeared off the face of the earth, sent her one email saying sorry for not being her mentor anymore and didn’t even acknowledge the fact that she asked him out. I feel that if I was in her position I would’ve reacted in exactly the same way. However, when you read about it in a book it comes across as slightly irritating, Whitney had just turned 18 when they first met, Derek was much older and was getting ready to open the London branch of the theme park. At the time they were in completely different stages of their lives so you can see why Derek somewhat brushed her off.

As the book got going though and Whitney somewhat lets go off the past I started to love reading about her. She adores the park and couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. When in character Whitney gives every child the best experience they could ask for from a Princess and Whitney still lives in her dorm room on site to look after the younger members of staff. I instantly liked Derek, even in the beginning and he was very busy with the company he still took time for Whitney. I loved reading about Derek even more once he took on a low grade job in the park as Whitney’s Prince Charming – a meetable character.

This book is quite simply – fantastic. It tapped into my love of theme parks and romance novels perfectly. I loved the characters and I really loved the storyline. The romance part itself is a very slow burner but that doesn’t mean that you cant feel the tension between Whitney and Derek oozing from the pages throughout the story anyway. If you’re like me and love Disney style theme parks and romance books then you will love His Royal Highness. It has become an instant favourite book for me.

Synopsis –

I’ve spent eight years wishing I’d fall out of love with Derek Knightley. Blowing out birthday candles, chasing after shooting stars, making it rain spare change into mall fountains – every time it’s the same wish: forget about Derek.

But the day he walks back into my life, I realize there are two things time has yet to soften: my feelings for him and his chiselled jawline.

It’s infuriating that my heart still races when he walks into a room. I refuse to fall prey to old unrequited love, so I decide the less I’m around him, the better. Avoidance is key.

Unfortunately, Derek isn’t going to make it easy. As a teenager, I would have crawled on my hands and knees to attract his attention. Now I can’t seem to escape it.

I’m not sure why he’s bothering. He’s not just out of my league – he’s out of my tax bracket. As the sole heir to the Knightley Company, he’s as close to American royalty as you can get. As for me, I’m just a part-time princess at Knightley’s flagship magical theme park.

I spend my days playing make-believe, but Derek has no use for fairy tales. His unwavering confidence makes it clear he think I’ll surrender in the end.

He’s just biding his time.

Making me sweat.

His Royal Highness always gets what he wants. And he wants me.

If I Never Met You – Mhairi McFarlane

Laurie thinks she has her life pretty much worked out, she is doing great in a job that she loves and she found her soulmate in her childhood sweetheart Dan. That is, until Dan comes in one day and tells her its over, based on the excuse that he doesn’t want children and Laurie does. If this wasn’t heart-breaking enough, Laurie has to work with Dan and soon has to contend with the office gossips talking about Dan and his pregnant girlfriend. In a bizarre turn of fate Laurie gets stuck with the office playboy Jamie. Laurie wants something to stop the gossips talking about her and Dan’s relationship and Jamie needs a steady girlfriend to impress the bosses so he can get the promotion he’s after. They both agree to fake date, with photos of their perfect relationship being documented on social media. Soon, Laurie realises that she’s actually falling for her fake boyfriend and the lines between fake and real start to blur.

This book is fantastic. It plays into every single insecurity you have about being in a relationship so wonderfully. I was completely sucked into Laurie’s story and I was distraught when Dan left her. You know its a good book when you are drawn so heavily into the story that it starts to affect your own feelings in real life and this book definitely started to weave its way into my real life feelings the whole time I was reading it. It was like someone had taken out my own heart and stamped on it particularly during the early sections of this book. The author writes in such a realistic way which means that you can relate to the story and characters and that for me is the real strong point of this novel.

The characters have personality and that is something I like from this story. Jamie although from an outsiders point of view is seen as a playboy that sleeps around half of the females in the office so much so that his reputation follows him from job to job. However, from the minute he meets Laurie he treats her with respect, doesn’t try anything on, is this first to spring to Laurie’s defence and frankly just seems an all around nice guy. Laurie is understandably hurt and wants to hurt her ex even ten percent of how much he hurt her. However, she doesn’t use Jamie. She isn’t faking when meeting his family and friends, and even when they’re together they’re just having a good time as friends. Although Laurie, understandably, has her moments of being absolutely distraught that her long term boyfriend has left her, she doesn’t dwell too much on it. She’s too smart, independent and driven to stay in that depressive state and I like that. Even Dan, who you should hate for leaving Laurie so unexpectedly you cant by the end of the novel.

This is one of the best romance novels I’ve read in a long time. It’s such a simple concept a breakup which leads to a fake office romance but this book is so much more than that. It got into my brain, it was all I could think about until I got to the end and when I did finish the book it just made my heart so happy. The romance aspect of it isn’t full of sneaky fake kisses or anything like that, Jamie and Laurie are strictly friends with some well angled Instagram photos that make it look like they’re more. The friend aspect of this is what helps to make this book so good, its not a rushed romantic situation but you as a reader can definitely see the lines start to blur between fake relationship to friendship to real relationship.

Genuinely this is one of my favourite books I’ve read so I couldn’t recommend you buy this book more.

Synopsis –

If faking love is this easy… how do you know when it’s real?

When her partner of over a decade suddenly ends things, Laurie is left reeling—not only because they work at the same law firm and she has to see him every day. Her once perfect life is in shambles and the thought of dating again in the age of Tinder is nothing short of horrifying. When news of her ex’s pregnant girlfriend hits the office grapevine, taking the humiliation lying down is not an option. Then a chance encounter in a broken-down elevator with the office playboy opens up a new possibility.

Jamie Carter doesn’t believe in love, but he needs a respectable, steady girlfriend to impress their bosses. Laurie wants a hot new man to give the rumor mill something else to talk about. It’s the perfect proposition: a fauxmance played out on social media, with strategically staged photographs and a specific end date in mind. With the plan hatched, Laurie and Jamie begin to flaunt their new couple status, to the astonishment—and jealousy—of their friends and colleagues. But there’s a fine line between pretending to be in love and actually falling for your charming, handsome fake boyfriend…

The New Guy – Kathryn Freeman

Sam has had the worst day in the world, normally she has her life relatively on track but it’s the day of her grandfathers funeral and she just needs a distraction. Sam starts talking to the hot guy sat next to her at a bar and before she knows it they end up having a one night stand. They both agree beforehand that it would only ever be a one night thing to the extent that neither would know the others name. That night was the much needed fun that Sam needed except that when she walks into the office the next day, her new employee Ryan, just happens to be the guy from the night before. Sam has a strict no relationship with employee’s rule but will her heart let her make an exception with Ryan?

I really enjoyed the storyline. Its an office romance style novel except the roles are reversed with the female being the boss and they male being the employee. The company is just a small business and everyone is very friendly and supportive to one another so the arrival of moody Ryan causes a bit of a disruption. Top that off with the fact that Ryan is literally the only person at the company who can develop the companies new app before a rival business beats them too it.

Even based on the blurb the reader knows its going to be Sam and Ryan who have the one night stand but I really enjoyed reading it. I like how resistant he was to even talk to her and her constant need just to have someone to talk to – I feel like in those opening few chapters you find out so much about the two’s personalities. The characters on the surface constantly fit that happy, chatty vs moody stereotype but as you keep reading you realise that there is much more to these characters than that. However, some parts of the characters personalities such as Ryan’s constant need to be reassured by Sam started to get a little irritating at times.

Overall I liked this book. Is it going to be a book you read time and time again? No. But if you’re looking for a office romance book that’s nice and easy to read I would definitely pick this one.

Synopsis –

Sam Huxton doesn’t do one-night stands, especially not with men she’s just met! But the hot guy at the bar was hard to resist and one night is all they share – no names, no numbers, just some much needed fun…

Until the same guy walks into Sam’s life the next day as her new employee.  Sam never mixes business with pleasure and makes it clear an office fling with Ryan is off-limits.  But after-hours…one thing can lead to another. Can Sam trust her heart and her business with the new guy?

The Cruel Prince – Holly Black

Jude was only seven years old when a mysterious man turned up on her and her families doorstep and murdered both of her parents. The man who murders her parents then stole away Jude and her two sisters to live in the High Court Of Faerie. Ten years later Jude is desperate to fit in the world of Faerie, except she’s always considered the bottom of the heap because she is mortal and human. Jude somewhat befriends the future King of Faerie and finds herself tangled in the world of trickery and deception within the palace. Jude soon realises that she needs to risk her life to save Faerie from crashing down around them.

This book has been out two years now and probably for the best part of those two years I have been repeatedly told to read this book. You know when your to be read pile gets too big so you don’t buy many books but then when you do its always a latest release you got excited about so never buy the older books you want to read? This for me was that book! With Christmas money I finally caved and bought this book and now I’ve finished it I instantly regret not purchasing it sooner!

When I started to read this book I wondered what all the hype is around it. It’s been a while since I read a fantasy novel and I’d somewhat forgotten how long it takes me to get into a new world. However, within a few chapters this book got me hooked so much so I finished it within a few days of starting it! It is completely worth sticking with this book and I think the slow moving beginning is important for you to get to grips with the world and characters.

The world is so wonderfully explained and you can imagine every single palace and the world itself quite vividly very quickly. I found it particularly good when Jude was creeping around areas she shouldn’t be in. It’s interesting that this world is just a stones throw away from the human world and that Jude and his sisters can literally just fly to enter the human world for a visit.

A big part of what makes this book so good in the characters. Every character your introduced to is likeable which is strange considering the entire what through you aren’t sure who you can trust and who you cant. You follow the story through the eyes of Jude and after her tragic beginning you expect her to maybe be a little dysfunctional so it comes as no surprise that she longs to be accepted into this new world she’s now apart of. I found Jude completely likeable and it was interesting to read about how she’s treated by other characters and how she views them.

The storyline too is fantastic. It keeps you on your toes very early on. The story has twists all over the place and I think if you asked me what I thought would happen when I started I wouldn’t have guess the ending. The story was quite intense too and really did keep you held in suspense from start to finish. I also liked the odd bit of romance that was weaved into the story, it is predominately a fantasy novel but I did enjoy the potential love interest as a sub plot.

As you can tell I loved this book! Thankfully this book has two more in the series so you can bet I’ll be downloading them straight onto my Kindle!

Synopsis –

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years late, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the court, she must defy him – and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

In The Time We Lost – Carrie Hope Fletcher

Luna Lark has had a tough time in life since her husband to be left her jilted at the aisle. She’s not been able to shake off her sadness since, so she decides to escape to Ondingside in order to write her new novel. A remote village in Scotland in the middle of nowhere that is home to just one hundred and fifty residents seemed the perfect place to escape. The perfect place that is until the little village gets a freak snow storm in July which freezes the town.

Before you read on, this blog post contains some slight spoilers so if you want to read this book and don’t want to know anything stop reading now!

This book…where do I begin! The opening chapter where Luna was left standing outside the church on her wedding day with the horrible realisation that her husband to be wasn’t going to turn up – I had such high hopes for this book from this. I thought it was going to be the type of romance novel where a bad event happens to a character and then they found love again in an unsuspecting place. However, this was not really the case. I went into the book pretty blind to the plot and I admit that I just wanted to read it as I really like the author Carrie Hope Fletcher, so the fact the plot went in a different direction to what I expected was my own fault for not reading the blurb.

My main real issue with the book happened relatively early on as I was so utterly confused during the beginning of the book. I read a chapter and then the chapter repeated again with some slightly different changes and it took me to the third time that I read the same story again that I realised that it was something to do with the plot and not some printing error in my copy of the book. It was during this point where the days were repeating that I was close to abandoning ship on this book. Personally, for me it was just too repetitive and I got quite bored of reading the same day where the character did the same things, again and again and again! Yes, the main character did go through some progression as a person as she kept on repeating the days but for me it wasn’t enough and it was just an effort to get through it. I do truly get what the author was trying to do by repeating the days especially when all the characters are blissfully unaware of the day reoccurring, but I really think it could’ve been done in a quicker way that didn’t make the reader loose interest.

I have no real feelings towards the characters. Usually in a book I find something relatable in them and that is what gets my attention but none of the characters were relatable for me. Although the characters go through a little development it’s hard for them considering that none of them can remember the day before. I think I didn’t go on enough of an adventure with any of the characters considering it was just seeing them living the same day in slightly different ways. I didn’t care what happened to any of them and I wasn’t routing for the potential love story to happen. Strangely one of my favourite characters was someone who was introduced further on in the story, you read a little of his backstory before he entered the village and shook things up. He had spirit and something about him compared with the two dimensional characters living in the village.

Once you manage to get past this however and the story starts to move on from the looping day I did find myself enjoying the story. It was interesting to read how the characters react to the realisation they were living in a never ending looping day with no memory of the day before. I quite enjoyed how the end wasn’t quite the happily ever after you expect from a book of this genre either. However, the ending didn’t resolve many of the plot points and I’m now left with quite a few unanswered questions that I would very much like the answer too.

If the first half of the book was as good as the first half this book could’ve genuinely been good. I did like the plot idea, I just wished it had been executed better. I am a big fan of the author and I do think she’s talented, plus her other books have been ok, just for me I sadly didn’t get on with this book.

Synopsis –

The BRAND NEW NOVEL from Sunday Times bestselling author Carrie Hope Fletcher, coming October 2019.

‘Reminded me so much of Cecelia Ahern’ Ali McNamara
‘Our go-to for spellbinding stories with a magical edge’ Heat

*****
Luna Lark used to love her name, but that was before people started saying it differently.

I’m so sorry, Luna.
Are you alright, Luna?
Everything will be okay, Luna.

Now Luna is taking back control by starting again in the most remote place she could find: Ondingside, a magical little town with barely a hundred and fifty people in the middle of nowhere important. She’ll finally finish her latest novel, get herself back to normal, maybe even find love (and continue being a hopeless romantic).

But on her first night in Ondingside a freak July snow fall freezes the town. Snowed in, the town stands still. Can Luna break out of the monotony and do what she came to do?

2020 Goals

First of all Happy New Year!

Normally every year I make New Years resolutions but then it gets to this time of year and I feel very deflated that in my head I’ve done absolutely nothing towards achieving them. I’m sure like most people, my resolutions are always the most unrealistic things as the chances of me becoming a millionaire or the likelihood of me ever being able to be fit enough to run a marathon a day is so unlikely.

I was told instead of doing a resolution that I should try writing down a list of things that I’d like to do in a year then this time next year I can look back and see how much I’d actually managed to do in a year rather than being fixated on the one thing I hadn’t achieved.

This is probably just a year bucket list but I thought I would share some of the things on my list for 2020!

Do you have a list of things that you’d like to achieve / do in 2020? I’d love to know some of your goals too!

Blog

My big aim for 2020 is to make sure I blog 52 times – so at least once a week. I’d love to do more but I don’t want to commit to it if I don’t feel like doing multiple posts that week.

I have to admit as much as I love blogging, I quite frequently leave it until Saturday to write up and edit my posts as I tend to feel quite stressed out in a week with work. I want to be able to have posts ready to go and set aside even 15 minutes in a week to write or at least brainstorm blog ideas.

I’d also like to become more involved in the blogging community. I spend a lot of time reading posts from blogs I follow but I very rarely interact with them. I’d like to go out of my comfort zone next year and make a real effort to comment on posts more.

Obviously I do this completely for fun, but from a growth point of view I’d like to aim to get 200 followers by the end of year. I know this is highly unlikely but it would be a nice bonus if I could achieve this.

Books

I always aim low with my book reading goal as although I really enjoy reading I never want to put pressure on how much I read, but as ever I hope to read 20 books in 2020 – a goal which I’ve always easily doubled.

I’d like to try and write up my review for most books that I read. Although I mostly do this now I go through stages were I just binge read and then never bother to write anything up on any of the books I read even if I really enjoyed them.

This year I would like to make a real effort to participate in a reading challenge. Every year I half think about doing the popsugar reading challenge but then I end up not bothering. So early on in the year I’m going to write out the list and associate a specific book with each option and try and read as many of them as possible. I’m not going to aim to complete it but it would be nice to tick some off the list. I feel like this will help me read books out of genres I normally choose.

I would also like to put myself on a bit of a book buying ban – though not sure how likely that will be! The amount of books on my to be read shelf now is getting slightly out of control so in 2020 I would like to read books quicker than I buy them.

Music

My aim for 2020 is to see 6 concerts which I hope will be achievable enough especially when I already have four booked so far.

I have a separate two goals on my list for seeing McFly and Taylor Swift in concert which I know (assuming they don’t cancel due to illness etc) will happen, I hoped having things on my list that I knew I would do would make me appreciate the year more.

I also have wrote down to go to a festival. I already have a ticket to Glastonbury so I know I can tick this one straight off the list but I added it on as I feel like I take it far too much for granted that attending a festival is actually quite a big thing.

Theatre

I have set a target of seeing 6 theatre shows in 2020. I already have three booked so I felt that even with the expense of tickets that 6 shows in 2020 was still achievable. I’m hoping aiming for six will give the the push I need to go check out the shows that are on tour in my local theatres too rather than sticking to the West End.

Like with concerts I have separately wrote down things I actually have booked to see already – Be More Chill, Only Fools & Horses and Phantom Of The Opera. I’ve started to realise it’s important to recognise that going to go and see things even if I booked them in 2019 its still a privilege that I’m going and I should still acknowledge how lucky I am to be able to tick them off my years list.

Under the theatre category I have a couple of extra options as I would desperately like to see Dear Evan Hansen again and I have another box to tick for seeing Sam Tutty as Evan. His Evan was one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen and I would love to see him in the role again.

I would also like to see Six, a show which I always half attempt to see then end up booking something else I want to see more instead. Six is currently touring so hopefully it will be easier for me to see it now.

Travel

Travelling is abit restricted in 2020 as money is tight after two long haul holidays in 2019, so sadly I can’t have any big long haul destinations planned for 2020 so I thought I’d try and save and visit a European city for a couple of days or even go to a day trip to Paris on the Eurostar!

I recently read a statistic which was a crazy percentage of UK residents that had never visited Stonehenge…I am ashamed to admit that I am one of those people. So next year I would very much like to tick that off the list! Also on that list was Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Tor, which although I’ve been very close up I’ve never walked up the hill. So this year I’ve decided to put more UK based things on my list on things to do to tick off these places that I should’ve seen before.

I’ll probably add a few more places to the list but as of now my full travel list this year is –

  • Visit A European City
  • Visit Cheddar Gorge
  • Visit Glastonbury Town
  • Visit Glastonbury Tor
  • Visit Harry Potter Studio Tour
  • Visit London
  • Visit Madame Tussaud’s London
  • Visit A Theme Park

Personal Goals

I have a few goals that I would like to achieve for myself too. Lots of these are too boring to even bother to include in this post or too personal that no one would particularly care about them other than me, but some things on the list include – finish writing a novel, spend time more productively, use social life media more healthily and raise money for charity.

Hopefully as the year progresses I can update the things I’ve done through the year in a blog post but if I don’t do that I think it’ll be nice to revisit this in a years time and see how much I’ve managed to achieve.

Thanks to everyone who reads this post and I hope you all have a wonderful 2020!

Marriage on Madison Avenue (Central Park Pact #3) – Lauren Layne

Marriage On Madison Avenue tells the story of Audrey Tate. Audrey thought she loved a man who she believed was finalising his divorce, in reality she was one of three woman this man was stringing along. When the girls find out, they form a pact to look out for each other and warn each other off any future bad relationships. Now the other two girls are all settled down in a good relationship that just leaves Audrey. Audrey has had disastrous relationship one after another and really is starting to feel like her happily after will never happen. So when Audrey’s best friend since she was a kid, Clarke West, announces to his mother that he’s engaged to her she goes along with it on the condition they would break off the engagement within a couple of days. However, the pair quickly discover that pretending to be in a relationship together may not be as easy as they anticipated.

First of all I can’t believe that this is book number three in a series and second of all I can’t believe that I’ve never read or even heard of the first two books in the series because if they’re anything like book three this is definitely going to be one of the best romance series. It’s been quite a long time now since I read a book that I absolutely adored and this definitely fits in that category.

Audrey and Clarke are great characters and I loved reading about them. Audrey on the surface seems relatively fake especially given that her career is being an influencer, making money from posting up photos on Instagram. She somewhat thrives on the good press and business opportunities she gets from being engaged to Clarke. Clarke as well has his flaws, he’s a womaniser and knows that he is absolutely not the kind of guy to settle down. However, when you read the book you quickly realise that the pair are so much more than they appear on the surface and what I particular enjoyed reading is the love the pair have for each other, even as friends. No matter what they’re both always there for each other and that is such a fantastic character trait.

The storyline itself, you already know what is going to happen from quite early on in the story. Does that ruin it when it actually happens? Absolutely not. The last few chapters when things are really heating up and you get the speech which just makes your heart melt with the sheer romantic-ness of it all – its everything you wanted from this book. I absolutely loved the way in which the author writes, she captures your attention from the word go and you go through the emotional journey with the characters are you’re reading. I laughed, I cried and I wanted to go into the story and scream in frustration at the characters for not seeing that they loved each other as more than friends, if that isn’t the sign of a good story I don’t know what is.

I knew from the blurb that this was going to be my kind of story but I never anticipated loving this story as much as I did. It’s very rare than I buy a physical edition of a book nowadays as I just don’t have the space so I have to really love a book to buy the physical copy but as soon as I finish writing this I’m heading to Waterstones to preorder the book.

Marriage On Madison Avenue is out on the 28th January and if you like romance novels then this book is just about as good as you’re going to get and I truly couldn’t recommend it more.

Synopsis –

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne, comes the final instalment of the Central Park Pact series, a heartful and laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that’s perfect for fan of Sally Thorne and Christina Lauren.

Can guys and girls ever be just friends? according to Audrey Tate and Clarke West, absolutely. After all, they’ve been best friends since childhood without a single romantic entanglement. Clarke is the charming playboy Audrey can always count on, and he knows that the ever-loyal Audrey will never not play along with his strategy for dodging his matchmaking mother – announcing he’s already engaged…to Audrey.

But what starts out as a playful game between two best friends turns into something infinitely more complicated ,as just-for-show kisses begin to stir up forbidden feelings. As the faux wedding date looms closer, Audrey and Clarke realize that they can never go back to the way things were, but deep down, do they really want to?

2019 Favourites

I thought I would do a little wrap up on my favourite books / theatre shows / music of 2019. I think it’ll be nice for myself to look back on next year and see what my favourites are now in comparison to a years time. Plus I’ve really enjoyed reading other peoples 2019 favourite blog posts.

So without further ado, here is my top two favourite books, theatre shows and music of 2019!

Would love to hear what your favourites of the year have been in the comments!

Books

I decided to go off Goodreads for this one and pick out of the books that I’d given a five star rating too. Coincidentally I only rated two books as 5 stars this year and as even more of a coincidence they’re the last two books that I’ve read so typically my blog posts about them aren’t up yet so I don’t want to go into too much detail about them.

  • The Christmasaurus And The Winter Witch – Tom Fletcher

I love The Christmasaurus. I am completely out of the target audience for this series of books but they’re just full of Christmassy magic and has a dinosaur so what more do you want from a Christmas story.

The Christmasarus And The Winter Witch is book number two in the series. It’s sort of difficult to explain what happens without spoilers to parts of book one but all you need to know is that this book takes place a year after book one. William Trundle and his family gets invited to take a tour of the North Pole with Santa himself and discoverers the secret weapon to ensure all the children get their presents on Christmas Eve. But then everything goes wrong and the fate of all future Christmas Days rests in the hands of William!

If you’ve never heard of The Christmasaurus you must check out the first book first. It is even released as a musical edition where the songs are so catchy and fitting to the story. As its a children’s book you can expect the illustrations to be great and this book certainly has a great illustrator.

I purposely waited and read this book on Christmas Day and it provided that little bit of Christmas magic you need at this time of year. I find sequels tend to be not as good as book one, but The Christmasaurus And The Winter Witch is one of the few that is just as good.

  • Marriage On Madison Avenue – Lauren Layne

The irony that this book is in my best of 2019 list when it isn’t even out until 2020! However, I read this book this year so I feel that’s still fine for me to be classing it in this list. A blog post is coming up tomorrow about this book so I’ll edit this post to include the link once its up.

This story is about Audrey who doesn’t have the best luck in relationships. Her best friend Clarke is fed up of his mother trying to meddle in his dating life so tells her that he is engaged to Audrey. The pair are strictly best friends, always have been and always will be. They don’t feel any romantic connection to each other, that is until they start pretending to be engaged and the lines begin to blur.

This book is one of those stories that makes your heart happy and it’s genuinely one of the best romance novels that I’ve read in a long time. Your must read book for 2020!

Theatre

I saw a lot of shows this year. Although I can honestly say that I loved everything I saw this year (normally I see a few things that fell abit flat) but two shows are the real stand outs for me this year.

  • Beetlejuice

Whenever anyone gets me into a conversation about musicals, it doesn’t take me long to start talking about how much of an incredible performer I think Alex Brightman is. When I saw him in School Of Rock I left the theatre in awe of his performance so the minute I heard he was going to be staring in Beetlejuice I knew it would be amazing and I could only hope to get to America to see the show, which luckily I did.

Beetlejuice is an incredible show – end of. It’s hilarious with so many moments making you uncontrollably laugh, Alex Brightman’s lively portrayal of Beetlejuice didn’t disappoint in the slightest, the music is catchy and you’ll have it on repeat, the cast is insanely talented, visually the show is stunning and it even has a few special effects thrown in for good measure.

The show is shockingly being evicted from the Winter Garden Theatre next year so sadly as of the time of writing this it will be shutting very shortly so if you live near New York or have a holiday planned to go there, please get tickets to see Beetlejuice. I had never seen the film so knew very little about the plot but I absolutely loved the musical – it will not disappoint if you get tickets.

  • Dear Evan Hansen

If you’ve spent any time on this blog at all you’ll know Dear Evan Hansen was always going to be in my favourites list. I was lucky enough to see this show twice this year (Broadway and West End production) and words cannot describe how much I adore this show.

Dear Evan Hansen makes me uncontrollably cry more than anything I have ever seen but in a good way! This show really connects to so many people, myself included and I had to wait along time to see the show as it’s been a while since I was last in America and it wasn’t in London at the time but it was completely worthwhile. If you’ve not seen the show before I can only urge you to go and see it because its fantastic.

This show is a game changer in musicals for me. It’s such a simple story, the stage design is even simpler but it offers so much. The story is the real driving point, top that off with songs that you will listen to on loop for the foreseeable future and characters that everyone can relate to, it really cements itself as a musical that will stand the test of time.

I just can’t fully put into words how much I love this musical but if you get the chance to see it you really should take the opportunity to go!

Music

Like with the books I have got this from my Spotify wrap up and it looks like 2019 was truly the year of musicals.

  • Ben Platt

Number one on my list this year is Ben Platt. It’s not a surprise that Ben Platt ended up as number one as not only have I listened to his own album (Sing To Me Instead) on repeat, my listening of Dear Evan Hansen and The Politician is also classed as Ben Platt.

Ben Platt has quite a unique voice. I feel like you’ll absolutely love him or won’t like him at all. His voice for me truly gives you chills during some of his song – he is crazily talented. My favourite from his album is If I Dont Live Forever but I feel if you’ve not heard his music before a good place to start would be with the singles Bad Habit and Rain.

I was lucky enough to catch Ben Platt’s Radio City show which is going to be on Netflix in the new year and I can confirm he is vocally as incredible in real life as on CD. If you like Ben Platt in the slightest I can’t recommend seeing him live enough.

If you’ve never heard of him, check out his album or wait for the Netflix concert!

  • Will Roland

Will Roland being second in my top artists of the year really surprised me. This has obviously come from my obsessive listening of the Be More Chill cast recording (with probably abit if Dear Evan Hansen thrown in for good measure) as I was so excited to see the show on Broadway…then it shut early!

Will Roland is someone who I am desperate to see perform live. He has such an expressive voice and I can only imagine how fantastic he must be actually in a show.

The Be More Chill Broadway Cast Recording is one of my favourites. I’ve mentioned this before on my blog but I actually prefer the Broadway cast to the original recording. For me, Will Roland has the perfect voice for Jeremy and I think the songs sound even better when he sings them.

The whole album is good from start to finish and you can see how the whole thing went viral and brought the show back to Broadway.

I’m sure Will Roland will feature highly in my Spotify list in 2020 too as Be More Chill comes to London so you already know the obsessive listening is going to return!

  • Taylor Swift

I know I said I was only going to be doing two options for each but I feel like Taylor Swift needs a special mention. I know based on last.fm that I’ve listened to Taylor a lot this year but a lot of the ways that I listen to her won’t have been counted online. I play her music so much on vinyl and on my iPod which is so old it isn’t Spotify compatible.

Taylor Swift is one of those go to artists that you can chose any of her albums, play from start to finish and love every single song that’s on it.

I already know she’ll feature very highly next year as I get to see her headline Glastonbury which I already know is going to be one of the highlights of my year.

Cats The Movie – Review

I saw Cats in London’s West End a couple of years back and since that day I have repeatedly told people that its the worst theatre show I have ever seen. It wasn’t that the actors weren’t doing incredibly and seeing the shows hit song Memory performed on stage was every bit as amazing as I expected – I just didn’t get the show. I thought the set itself was quite dated and I just didn’t understand what on earth was going on. Despite this I have to admit that I have never dashed to a cinema so quick to see a film. The trailer looked so good and I hoped the film would help me piece together the parts of the musical that I just didn’t understand.

I walked into the cinema with below low expectations, how was I supposed to enjoy a film that I have spent years telling people not to go and see on stage? I went in with an open mind and nearly two hours later, I walked out having surprisingly enjoyed every second of the movie. I wouldn’t normally write a blog post like this as I absolutely don’t watch anywhere near enough films to know what is critically a good film to judge it but as Cats is getting slated in the press later I thought it was worth mentioning my opinions.

For those who are unfamiliar with Cats, it follows the story of the tribe of cats known as the Jellicle cats who meet up yearly to decide which member of the tribe will be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer for the chance to new life. You experience the Jellicle choice through the eyes of Victoria, a cat who gets abandoned on the evening of the Jellicle cats meeting and gets shown the ropes by the group. In order to be considered to be chosen for the opportunity to be selected for the Heaviside Layer, the cats must sing and explain who they are and why they should be chosen.

The main reason why I didn’t enjoy the stage production is that it was just full of so many cats prancing around quite a boring stage set up for three hours and it was just a little boring. Although this is basically what the film is too, the different scenes really made it interesting to watch. Despite what the reviews are saying, I thought the Cats film was visually stunning. My personal favourite example of this is very early on in the film where the Jellicle cats are dancing around a Cat name tweaked London. I truly thought this scene was delightful to watch and really captured my attention from the word go. Whilst discussing how this movie looks I must mention how much I love the movie poster. I think it is beautiful and if the cinema sold movie posters I would absolutely have bought it to frame for my wall.

Cats is a very star studded cast and for non musical theatre fans this is likely to be the main drawer of this film. From popular celebrities such as James Corden to film legends like Ian McKellen to famous singers like Taylor Swift – this cast will have someone that everyone who see’s this film will like. To be honest, I would’ve seen this film without the celebrity casting but it was a nice added bonus to see some of my personal favourite celebrities in this film and on the whole I thought they were all very well cast for the role. Again, despite what reviews are saying, I actually liked how well they were turned into Cats.

The movie stays relatively true to the stage production and that comes complete with the full musical score. Most of the film is largely driven by musical numbers and I think the musical nature should’ve been advertised more in the trailer. Personally, although I never enjoyed the stage show you can’t deny that the music in Cats is its real selling point and the movie did the songs justice. However, I feel like the large musical element may come as a shock to some watches of the movie. What I enjoyed about the movie too is that they added in a song for Victoria, something that was distinctly lacking in the stage show. The new song, Beautiful Ghosts, is very fitting with the film and I can only hope they find a way to weave it into the stage show too as it would be a real shame to not use it.

The plot I have to admit is relatively boring. You’re introduced to so many Cats in so little time and you don’t get to know enough about them to particularly care about any of them. The story is about all of these cats auditioning for the chance to go to the Heaviside Layer but as a viewer you never care enough about any of them to want them to be chosen as they’re all only on screen telling their story for 10 minutes max. Even when the bad guy cat Macavity (played by Idris Elba) comes along to sabotage anyone’s chance of winning you don’t really care if he does or not as you’re not invested enough in the characters to be bothered who wins the opportunity.

Overall I loved this film. I think I probably liked it so much as I had prior knowledge of Cats and I knew what the plot was and that it could be quite odd at times so when watching the movie I could just appreciate it for what is was rather than criticising the plot. I left pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed the film. Would I recommend it to others? Well, I didn’t hear one positive comment about the movie as we filtered out of the cinema screen, however I think if you do your research on the stage show before hand and like that then give the film a go! Don’t always listen to the reviews, you may be pleasantly surprised like I was.

Have you seen the film? What did you think?
